To make the perfect Dutch Baby Bake, you will need the following ingredients:
-
3 large eggs
-
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
-
3/4 cup milk
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
1 tablespoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
2 tablespoons butter (for the skillet)
-
Optional toppings: powdered sugar, fresh fruit, maple syrup, whipped cream, or lemon wedges
How to Make D B B
Follow these easy steps to prepare your own Dutch Baby Bake:
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a 10-inch cast-iron skillet or an oven-safe frying pan in the oven while it preheats. This will ensure the skillet gets nice and hot, which helps the Dutch Baby puff up during baking.
Step 2: Prepare the Batter
In a blender or mixing bowl, combine the eggs, flour, milk, salt, sugar, and vanilla extract. Blend or whisk until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. The batter should be quite thin, which is normal.
Step 3: Melt the Butter
Once your oven is preheated, carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven (use oven mitts!). Add the 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and swirl it around until the butter is fully melted and begins to sizzle.
Step 4: Pour in the Batter
Immediately pour the prepared batter into the hot, buttered skillet. Be careful as the skillet will be very hot. Return the skillet to the oven.
Step 5: Bake the Dutch Baby
Bake the Dutch Baby in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center has puffed up significantly. The Dutch Baby should be lightly browned and slightly crisp on the edges. Keep an eye on it, as it will rise dramatically during baking.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
Once the Dutch Baby Bake is done, carefully remove it from the oven and place it on a heat-resistant surface. The pancake will start to deflate as it cools, which is completely normal. Serve it immediately with your choice of toppings. You can dust it with powdered sugar, add fresh fruit like berries or sliced bananas, or drizzle it with maple syrup.
Tips
-
Hot Skillet is Key: Ensure that your skillet is hot when you pour in the batter. This helps create the characteristic puffiness and crispy edges.
-
Don’t Open the Oven Too Early: Avoid opening the oven door during the first 15 minutes of baking, as this can cause the pancake to deflate.
-
Customize Your Toppings: Feel free to get creative with toppings. Some delicious options include fresh berries, lemon zest, whipped cream, or even a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
-
Use a Cast-Iron Skillet: A cast-iron skillet is ideal for making a Dutch Baby Bake, but any oven-safe skillet will work. Just ensure it’s oven-safe to handle the high temperature.
