Homemade Soft Pretzel Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 package (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp. teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoons. tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cups baking soda (for baking)
  • 1 large eggs + 1 tsp. tablespoon water (for glaze)
  • Coarse salt for yeast

1️⃣ Activate yeast:
In a bowl, combine warm water and yeast.
Let stand 5 minutes until mixture is foamy.

2️⃣ Prepare the dough:
Add salt and sugar to the yeast mixture.
Gradually add the flour until a dough is formed.
Knead for 5 to 7 minutes until the mixture is smooth.

3️⃣ Let the dough rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

4️⃣ Form the pretzels:
Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a pretzel shape.

5️⃣ Baking soda bath:
In a pot, bring 9 cups of water with baking soda to a boil.
Dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

6️⃣ Egg wash and salt:
Brush the pastries with the egg wash.
Sprinkle with coarse salt.

7️⃣ Baking:
Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
Serving support
Serve hot with a cheese sauce, mustard or enjoy plain!
