Crafting homemade bread is a rewarding endeavor that fills your kitchen with warmth and an irresistible aroma. This straightforward recipe yields a soft, flavorful loaf perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying plain.

Ingredients:

  • 500g strong white flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 7g sachet of fast-action yeast
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 300ml water

Instructions:

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients:

    • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and yeast.
  2. Incorporate Wet Ingredients:

    • Create a well in the center of the dry mixture.
    • Pour in the olive oil and water.
    • Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough seems stiff, add 1-2 tablespoons of water and mix thoroughly.
  3. Knead the Dough:

    • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Knead for approximately 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise:

    • Place the kneaded dough into a lightly oiled bowl.
    • Cover with a damp cloth or cling film.
    • Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Dough:

    • Once risen, punch down the dough to release air.
    • Shape it into a loaf by folding and tucking the edges underneath.
    • Place the shaped dough into a lightly greased loaf tin.
  6. Second Rise:

    • Cover the loaf tin with a damp cloth or cling film.
    • Let the dough rise for another hour, or until it has risen above the tin’s edge.
  7. Bake:

    • Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan) or 425°F.
    • Dust the top of the loaf with a little flour.
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Cool:

    • Remove the bread from the oven.
    • Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Baking your own bread is a fulfilling process that results in a versatile and delicious staple. With just a few basic ingredients and steps, you can enjoy fresh, homemade bread that’s free from preservatives and tailored to your taste.
