There’s something special about homemade bread, especially when it’s made with just a handful of basic ingredients. This simple dough bread is perfect for beginners and seasoned bakers alike. With minimal prep and no fancy equipment required, you can enjoy a warm, golden loaf with a soft interior and crisp crust right from your own oven.

 Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup warm water (not hot)

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

 Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar or honey (if using). Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit undisturbed for 5–10 minutes.

How to know it’s ready: The mixture should look foamy and smell slightly yeasty. That means the yeast is active.

Step 2: Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and add the olive oil if using. Stir with a spoon or spatula until a rough, shaggy dough forms.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by folding the dough over itself and pushing it away with the heels of your hands. Continue for 8–10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth, elastic, and only slightly tacky.

Step 4: First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning once to coat the surface. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape and Second Rise

Gently punch down the dough to release trapped air. Shape it into a round loaf (boule) or place it into a greased loaf pan. Cover again and let it rise for 30 minutes.

Step 6: Bake

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30–35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Test for doneness: Tap the bottom of the loaf — it should sound hollow.

Step 7: Cool

Transfer the bread to a wire rack and allow it to cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing. This helps the inside set properly and keeps the texture perfect.

 Conclusion

With just four basic ingredients and a little time, you can create a beautiful homemade loaf that’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, or serving warm with butter. Once you try this simple dough bread, store-bought bread just won’t taste the same!
