Tiganopsomo (Greek Fried Bread) Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Olive oil for frying
- Optional toppings: honey, cinnamon sugar, or feta cheese and herbs
Instructions:
- Make the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and gradually mix in the warm water until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Let it rest for 30 minutes, covered.
- Shape the Bread:
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a disc about 1/2 inch thick. Make a few slits in the center of each disc to help it cook evenly.
- Fry the Bread:
- Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Place the dough discs in the hot oil, frying each side for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
- Add Toppings:
- Serve warm, sprinkled with your choice of toppings: drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar for a sweet version, or top with crumbled feta and fresh herbs for a savory snack.
