Salisbury Steak with Mushroom and Onion Gravy

Instructions

  1. Make the Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
    • Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape them into oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil.
    • Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until well browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions until they are soft and lightly browned.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring constantly, for about 1-2 minutes to cook the flour.
    • Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top.
    • Simmer everything together for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, topped with the mushroom and onion gravy. They pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes or rice.
