Greek Lemon Chicken and Potatoes is a traditional dish that brings together the zesty flavor of lemon, succulent chicken, and perfectly roasted potatoes. Known in Greece as “Kotopoulo Lemonato,” this dish is simple to prepare and perfect for family dinners or gatherings. The chicken is juicy, the potatoes absorb all the wonderful juices, and the hint of oregano and garlic adds a distinct Mediterranean flair.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken (about 2.5 lbs / 1.1 kg), cut into 8 portions
  • 2 lbs (1 kg) potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Juice of 3 medium lemons
  • 1 tsp white wine vinegar
  • 4-5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp peppercorns
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 3.5 oz (100g) feta cheese, cubed (optional)
  • Water (enough to cover half the chicken in the tray)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
    • Divide the chicken into 8 portions and rub the garlic all over the chicken pieces.
    • Place the chicken on a large baking tray and season generously with salt and pepper.
  2. Add the Potatoes:
    • Place the potato wedges between the chicken pieces in the tray.
    • Pour enough water into the tray to cover about half of the chicken.
  3. Season and Flavor:
    • Drizzle the olive oil over the chicken and potatoes.
    • Pour in the lemon juice and white wine vinegar.
    • Add the peppercorns and sprinkle the dried oregano on top.
    • Season everything again with salt and pepper.
  4. Bake:
    • Cover the tray with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 60-75 minutes.
    • After 50 minutes, remove the aluminum foil and add the cubed feta cheese (if using) on top of the chicken.
    • Continue baking uncovered for another 15-20 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve your Greek Lemon Chicken and Potatoes hot, ideally with a side of Greek feta salad and some sourdough bread to soak up the delicious lemony sauce.
