Chocolate pie, a classic dessert rooted in early 20th-century American cuisine, embodies comfort and indulgence. Originally popularized in the South, this treat became a favorite due to its simple preparation and rich flavor. With its creamy chocolate filling and choice of whipped cream or meringue topping, it has become a go-to dessert for all occasions.

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie shell (store-bought or homemade)

For the Chocolate Filling

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 12 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • Optional: chocolate shavings or sprinkles

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Crust

  • Use a pre-baked pie crust to save time. Blind-bake it if preparing from scratch, and let it cool completely.

Step 2: Make the Chocolate Filling

  1. Combine sugar, flour, and cocoa powder in a medium saucepan.
  2. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Heat over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble (about 10–15 minutes).
  3. Add the chopped chocolate, stirring until melted and smooth.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract. Let the custard cool slightly.

Step 3: Assemble the Pie

  • Pour the chocolate filling into the cooled pie crust. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight until set.

Step 4: Add Toppings

  • Whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Spread or pipe the whipped cream over the pie. Garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.

Conclusion

This chocolate pie is a delightful combination of creamy chocolate custard and light whipped topping, making it perfect for any celebration. It’s best served chilled, and the flavor can be enhanced with creative garnishes like berries, nuts, or a drizzle of caramel. Enjoy this timeless dessert that brings joy to every bite.
