Made with just a few pantry staples and plenty of sweet chopped onions, they fry up in minutes and deliver a savory, slightly sweet bite that’s perfect for dipping or serving as a side. Think of them as the perfect cross between onion rings and hush puppies!
Ingredients
-
1 cup all-purpose flour
-
1 tbsp sugar
-
1 tbsp baking powder
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
½ cup whole milk
-
1 egg
-
2 cups chopped onions (yellow, white, or sweet)
-
Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
-
Make the Batter
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Add the milk and egg and mix until smooth. Fold in the chopped onions until fully coated. -
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or saucepan, heat 1½ to 2 inches of oil over medium heat to 350°F (175°C). -
Fry the Fritters
Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until puffed and golden brown. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. -
Drain and Serve
Use a slotted spoon to transfer fritters to a paper towel-lined plate. Let drain briefly, then serve hot with dipping sauces of choice.
Notes
-
Sweet onions (like Vidalia) give the best flavor, but yellow or white onions work too.
-
Add a pinch of paprika or cayenne for heat.
-
Serve with ranch, spicy mayo, ketchup, or garlic aioli.
-
To keep fritters warm while frying in batches, place them on a baking sheet in a 200°F (90°C) oven.
-
Reheat in the oven or air fryer to restore crispiness — avoid microwaving.
-
These are best served fresh but can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.
