Apple Fritters Recipe

Ingredients

  • For the Fritters:
    • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
    • 1 cup (about 2 medium apples) peeled, cored, and diced
    • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the Glaze (optional):
    • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
    • 2-3 tablespoons milk
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fritter Batter:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
    • Fold in the diced apples.
  2. Heat the Oil:
    • In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Fry the Fritters:
    • Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter (about 2 tablespoons each) into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan.
    • Fry the fritters for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
    • Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Make the Glaze (optional):
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    • Drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters, or dip the fritters into the glaze to coat.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the apple fritters warm. They are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated if needed.

Tips

  • Apples: Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for a good balance of tartness and sweetness.
  • Glaze: Adjust the consistency of the glaze by adding more milk for a thinner glaze or more powdered sugar for a thicker glaze.
