Caramel flan, also known as “crème caramel,” is a classic and beloved dessert that is cherished for its creamy texture and rich caramel flavor. This recipe will guide you through the steps to create a perfect caramel flan that is sure to impress your family and friends.

Ingredients

  • For the caramel:
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup water
  • For the custard:
    • 4 cups whole milk
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 6 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • A pinch of salt

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Caramel

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 cup of water.
  2. Heat over medium heat, swirling the pan occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and turns a golden amber color.
  3. Immediately pour the caramel into a rectangular baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Step 2: Prepare the Custard

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large saucepan, heat 4 cups of whole milk over medium heat until it is warm but not boiling.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together 6 large eggs, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the warm milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from cooking.
  5. Strain the custard mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into the prepared caramel-coated baking dish to remove any egg solids.

Step 3: Bake the Flan

  1. Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan. Fill the roasting pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the baking dish, creating a water bath.
  2. Carefully transfer to the preheated oven and bake for 60-70 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  3. Remove the baking dish from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Step 4: Serve

  1. To unmold the flan, run a knife around the edges of the baking dish. Place a serving platter over the dish and invert it to release the flan.
  2. Slice and serve the caramel flan chilled, enjoying the delightful combination of creamy custard and rich caramel.

Conclusion

This traditional caramel flan is a dessert that never fails to impress with its elegant presentation and delectable taste. Whether you’re serving it at a family gathering or a dinner party, this flan is sure to be a hit. Enjoy!
