How to Make Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese
✅ Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and set it aside.
✅ Step 2: Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook it for 1 minute less than the package instructions for “al dente” (about 8 minutes).
Drain the pasta and toss it with a little olive oil to keep it from sticking.
✅ Step 3: Make the Cheese Sauce
In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, melt the butter.
Add the flour and whisk constantly for 1 minute to form a roux.
Slowly whisk in the milk and half-and-half, continuing to stir until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens.
Remove from heat and stir in the Worcestershire sauce.
Gradually add all of the Velveeta cheese and 1½ cups of the cheddar cheese.
Whisk or stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
Add salt, dry mustard, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Mix well.
✅ Step 4: Combine and Bake
Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until evenly coated.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
Sprinkle the remaining 1½ cups of cheddar cheese on top.
Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden.
