Crinkle Cake
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cup lukewarm water (more as needed)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- For the Butter Mixture:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- For the Sugar Syrup:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon orange blossom water (optional)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder.
- Gradually add the lukewarm water while mixing, until a soft and slightly sticky dough forms.
- Add the 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rest for about 15 minutes.
- Make the Butter Mixture:
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with the vegetable oil. Set aside.
- Shape and Crinkle the Dough:
- Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
- Roll each dough ball out as thinly as possible on a lightly oiled surface, forming a large, almost translucent circle.
- Brush the entire surface of the rolled-out dough with the butter mixture.
- Using your fingers, gather the dough from opposite sides, crinkling it towards the center to form a long, pleated strip.
- Coil the pleated dough strip into a spiral or snail shape, tucking the end underneath.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
- Bake the Crinkle Cakes:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
- Place the crinkle cakes on the prepared baking sheet and brush them generously with the butter mixture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cakes are golden brown and crispy.
- Prepare the Sugar Syrup:
- While the cakes are baking, prepare the sugar syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the orange blossom water and lemon juice, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
- Finish the Crinkle Cakes:
- Once the crinkle cakes are done baking, remove them from the oven and immediately drizzle the warm sugar syrup over them.
- Let the cakes cool slightly before serving.
