French Dip Squares are a delightful twist on the classic French Dip sandwich, offering layers of flaky crescent dough, savory roast beef, melted cheese, and caramelized onions baked into an easy-to-share appetizer or main dish. Accompanied by a flavorful au jus dipping sauce, this recipe combines rich, comforting flavors with simple preparation, perfect for parties or family dinners

Ingredients:

  • 2 (8 oz) cans refrigerated crescent rolls
  • ½ pound deli-sliced roast beef
  • 9 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard (optional)
  • Fresh thyme (optional, for garnish)
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Unroll one can of crescent rolls and press it into the bottom of the dish, sealing seams to form a single layer. Bake this layer for about 10–12 minutes until lightly golden and set aside.
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Stir occasionally until onions are soft and caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  3. Assemble: Spread mustard (if using) on the baked crescent layer. Layer roast beef slices evenly, followed by cheese and caramelized onions. Top with the second crescent roll layer, pinching seams together to seal the edges.
  4. Bake: Melt 1 tablespoon butter and brush it over the top. Sprinkle with thyme or parsley, if desired. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before slicing into squares.
  5. Prepare Au Jus: In a saucepan, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Add minced garlic and cook briefly until aromatic. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme sprigs. Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly reduced.
  6. Serve: Serve the warm squares with the au jus dipping sauce on the side.

Conclusion:

French Dip Squares deliver the nostalgic flavors of a classic French Dip sandwich in an easy, crowd-pleasing format. Their combination of gooey cheese, tender beef, and rich dipping sauce makes them a versatile option for appetizers or dinners. They’re simple to prepare and sure to impress at any gathering
