This glow-in-the-dark snowman is pure magic. I’ve made it about six times now, and my niece still calls it “magic snow!” It’s made from a simple baking soda dough that hardens beautifully and glows when the lights go out. This project is fun, budget-friendly, and much easier than it sounds—perfect for rainy days, winter crafts, or kids’ parties. The glow reveal at the end never gets old!
Ingredients
The Basics
-
2 cups baking soda
-
1 cup cornstarch (for a soft, silky texture)
-
1 cup warm water (warm water helps prevent lumps)
The Glow
-
½ to 1 teaspoon non-toxic glow-in-the-dark powder
(A little goes a long way—keep colors light for best glow. Wear gloves to avoid staining hands.)
Optional Add-Ins
-
Food coloring (pastel shades work best)
-
Essential oils (peppermint smells amazing)
Decorations
-
Mini buttons
-
Googly eyes
-
Toothpicks
-
Orange clay (for the nose)
Instructions
-
Cook the Dough
Add the baking soda, cornstarch, and warm water to a pot. Heat on medium, stirring constantly for 5–7 minutes until the mixture thickens into a dough.
Tip: Don’t overcook—it should be soft, not stiff like old Play-Doh. -
Cool Completely
Remove from heat, transfer the dough to a bowl, and let it cool fully before handling. -
Add the Glow
Put on gloves. Sprinkle in the glow powder and knead thoroughly until evenly mixed. Add more powder for a stronger glow if desired. -
Shape the Snowman
Roll one large ball for the body and one smaller ball for the head. Stack them gently. -
Decorate
Add buttons, eyes, toothpicks, and an orange clay nose while the dough is still soft. -
Dry
Place the snowman on parchment paper (not paper towels—they stick!). Let it air dry for 24–48 hours until completely hard. -
Charge & Glow
Place under bright light or sunlight for 5–10 minutes. Turn off the lights and enjoy the glow!
Conclusion
This glow-in-the-dark snowman is a simple craft with a huge wow factor. It’s easy enough for kids, fun for adults, and perfect for parties or cozy afternoons at home. The dough keeps for a few days in an airtight container, so you can make it ahead of time. When the lights go out and the snowman starts glowing, the reaction is always priceless—pure magic snow every time
