HAMBURGER STEAK WITH COUNTRY GRAVY

Meat Pies

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

country sauce

  • 4 tablespoons butter (see notes)
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • pinch ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 cups milk
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: Egg Noodles or Mashed Potatoes

INSTRUCTIONS

In a large bowl, combine meat, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, salt, onion powder and garlic powder. Form 6 burgers. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown burgers on both sides; approx. 4-5 minutes per side. Remove the burgers to an ovenproof dish and place in the oven at 300 degrees for 15 minutes.In the same skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add flour, cayenne pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Continue beating until golden brown and fragrant, about 7 minutes. Slowly add milk, stirring constantly. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 2-3 minutes.The sauce will thicken as it cools. Season with salt and pepper.
Put the burgers back in the pan and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

NOTES

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.Reheat on the stove at low heat or in the microwave at reduced power.
For the sauce, add enough butter to the pan to create 4 tablespoons of fat, including the fat from the burger.
This recipe tastes equally good with ground turkey or ground pork.
