Homemade Boiled and Baked Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling water)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
    • Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  2. Shape the Rolls:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8-10 equal pieces. Shape each piece into an oval roll.
    • Place the rolls on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rest for about 10 minutes.
  3. Boil the Rolls:
    • In a large pot, bring about 8 cups of water to a boil. Add the baking soda to the boiling water.
    • Carefully place the rolls, a few at a time, into the boiling water. Boil each roll for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
    • Remove the rolls from the water with a slotted spoon and place them back on the baking sheet.
  4. Bake the Rolls:
    • Score the tops of the rolls with a sharp knife to make slashes or X marks.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
    • Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve warm with butter or as a side to your favorite meal.
