Homemade Calzones Recipe
Ingredients
- For the Dough:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm water (110°F or 45°C)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- For the Filling:
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: cooked and crumbled sausage, pepperoni slices, sautéed vegetables
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until the dough comes together.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add any optional fillings like sausage, pepperoni, or vegetables and mix well.
- Assemble the Calzones:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a circle about 6-8 inches in diameter.
- Spoon a generous amount of the filling onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a border around the edge. Fold the other half over the filling and press the edges together to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
- Place the assembled calzones on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a few small slits on the top of each calzone to allow steam to escape.
- Bake the Calzones:
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and the dough is fully cooked.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, if desired.
