Patty Melt Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Patties:
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • For the Sandwich:
    • 8 slices of rye or sourdough bread
    • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
    • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or your favorite cheese)
    • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • Optional: fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
    • Add the thinly sliced onions and season with salt and pepper.
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes. If the onions start to dry out, add a little water to the skillet.
    • Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Patties:
    • In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder if using.
    • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty that is slightly larger than the bread slices.
    • In the same skillet used for the onions, cook the patties over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Butter one side of each slice of bread.
    • On the unbuttered side of four slices of bread, place one slice of cheese.
    • Top each with a cooked beef patty, followed by a generous amount of caramelized onions.
    • Add another slice of cheese on top of the onions.
    • Place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side out.
  4. Grill the Sandwiches:
    • Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Grill the sandwiches until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula to help the cheese melt evenly.
    • Remove from the skillet and let rest for a minute before slicing.
  5. Serve:
    • Slice the sandwiches in half, garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve immediately with your favorite side, such as chips or a pickle.
