Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes recipe is a mouthwatering fusion of two beloved classics. It features seasoned ground beef, sautéed bell peppers and onions, and melted provolone or mozzarella cheese, all sandwiched inside a soft toasted bun. Ready in under 30 minutes, it’s the perfect weeknight comfort meal that’s both satisfying and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef

  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 orange bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 white onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/4 cup beef broth (or water)

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper

  • 68 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese

  • 46 hamburger buns or brioche buns

  • Butter for toasting buns (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the vegetables:
In a large skillet over medium heat, add a little oil and sauté the chopped red and orange bell peppers with the onion for 4–5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 more minute.

  2. Cook the beef:
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain any excess fat.

  3. Add flavor:
Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, beef broth, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.

  4. Melt the cheese:
Place cheese slices on top of the beef mixture. Cover the skillet for 1–2 minutes until cheese melts, then gently stir to combine.

  5. Assemble the sandwiches:
Toast the buns if desired. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the buns, then close and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Cheese Options: Provolone is classic, but mozzarella, cheddar, or American cheese work well too.

  • Make It Spicy: Add chopped jalapeños or a pinch of chili flakes to the meat mixture.

  • Meal Prep Friendly: The beef filling can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for 3 days.

  • Buns Matter: Brioche buns add a buttery richness, while hoagie rolls offer a more traditional Philly texture.
