Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
- 1/2 cup sugar, divided
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons grated orange peel (zest of 1-2 oranges)
- 2 packets dry active yeast
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1 egg
For the Filling:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup almonds, ground
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
For the Glaze:
- 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup orange juice
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1/3 cup sugar, salt, orange zest, and yeast. Mix well and set aside.
Step 2: Heat the Milk and Butter
In a small saucepan, warm the milk and butter over low heat until it is warm but not hot. Gradually add the warm mixture to the flour mixture. Crack in the egg and use an electric mixer to mix for 2-3 minutes until combined.
Step 3: Form the Dough
Stir in the remaining flour gradually until a stiff dough forms. Cover the dough and set it aside in a warm place to rise for 35-50 minutes until it has doubled in size.
Step 4: Make the Filling
While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by combining powdered sugar, softened butter, ground almonds, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well and set aside.
Step 5: Roll and Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a 22”x12” rectangle. Spread the filling evenly over half of the dough lengthwise. Fold the uncovered dough over the filling to create a layered effect.
Step 6: Cut and Shape the Rolls
Cut the dough into 20-22 equal strips crosswise. Take each strip, twist it 4-5 times, and shape it into a swirl. Place each twisted roll onto a lined baking sheet, ensuring enough space for expansion.
Step 7: Second Rise and Bake
Cover the rolls and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Once risen, uncover the rolls and bake for 9-12 minutes.
Step 8: Glaze and Final Bake
While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar and orange juice. Once the rolls are lightly golden, brush them with the glaze and return them to the oven for an additional 3-5 minutes until golden brown.
Serving and Storage Tips
- Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
- Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- Reheat slightly before serving for a freshly baked taste.
