For the Steaks:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1/2 large onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make the Steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape them into oval patties.
- Cook the Steaks:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil.
- Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until well browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions until they are soft and lightly browned.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring constantly, for about 1-2 minutes to cook the flour.
- Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Combine and Serve:
- Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top.
- Simmer everything together for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, topped with the mushroom and onion gravy. They pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes or rice.
