sugar-coated donuts
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water (110°F – 115°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup milk, at room temperature
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (adjust as needed for dough consistency)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- Oil, for frying
- Additional granulated sugar or powdered sugar, for coating
Instructions:
- Dissolve the Yeast:
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water with a teaspoon of the granulated sugar. Let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
- Mix Wet Ingredients:
- Add the remaining sugar, milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined.
- Add Dry Ingredients:
- Combine the flour and salt. Gradually add them to the wet ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Shape the Donuts:
- Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with a donut cutter or use a large and a small cookie cutter to make rings.
- Second Rise:
- Place the shaped donuts on parchment paper, cover lightly, and let rise until puffed, about 30 minutes.
- Fry the Donuts:
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry the donuts in batches, until golden brown on both sides, about 1 minute per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Coat with Sugar:
- While still warm, roll the donuts in granulated sugar or dust with powdered sugar.
