Tiganopsomo (Greek Fried Bread) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Olive oil for frying
  • Optional toppings: honey, cinnamon sugar, or feta cheese and herbs

Instructions:

  1. Make the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and gradually mix in the warm water until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Let it rest for 30 minutes, covered.
  2. Shape the Bread:
    • Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a disc about 1/2 inch thick. Make a few slits in the center of each disc to help it cook evenly.
  3. Fry the Bread:
    • Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
    • Place the dough discs in the hot oil, frying each side for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.
    • Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  4. Add Toppings:
    • Serve warm, sprinkled with your choice of toppings: drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar for a sweet version, or top with crumbled feta and fresh herbs for a savory snack.
