Shoo Fly Pie is a classic dessert with roots in Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. Known for its sweet, sticky molasses filling and crumbly topping, this pie is a delightful treat that brings a taste of history to your table.

Ingredients:

  • Pie Crust:
    • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • Filling:
    • 1 cup molasses
    • 3/4 cup hot water
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Crumb Topping:
    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the molasses, hot water, and baking soda. Stir well to combine. Add the beaten egg and mix until smooth.
  3. Make the Crumb Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble the Pie: Pour the molasses mixture into the prepared pie crust. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the filling.
  5. Bake the Pie: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 35-40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the topping is golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Shoo Fly Pie can be enjoyed on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tips for a Perfect Shoo Fly Pie:

  • Molasses: Use dark molasses for a rich, robust flavor. If you prefer a milder taste, you can use light molasses or a combination of both.
  • Crumb Topping: Make sure the butter is cold to achieve a perfect crumbly texture for the topping.
  • Serving: This pie tastes best when it has had time to set and cool completely, allowing the flavors to meld together.
