Falafel is a traditional Middle Eastern dish made from chickpeas, herbs, and spices. These crispy, flavorful chickpea balls are versatile, making them a perfect addition to salads, wraps, or enjoyed as a snack. Easy to prepare and packed with protein, falafel is a satisfying option for vegetarians and vegans alike.

Ingredients

  • Main Ingredients:
    • 1 ½ cups dried chickpeas (or 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed)
    • 1 small onion, roughly chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 cup fresh parsley or cilantro (or a mix), roughly chopped
    • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • ½ teaspoon red chili flakes (optional, for heat)
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour or chickpea flour
  • Optional Additions:
    • Juice of ½ lemon
    • Sesame seeds for coating
  • For Frying or Baking:
    • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions

Preparation:

  1. Soak the Chickpeas:
    • If using dried chickpeas, soak them in plenty of water for 12-24 hours. Drain and rinse them thoroughly before using.
    • If using canned chickpeas, skip the soaking step but ensure they are well-drained.
  2. Blend the Ingredients:
    • Add chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley/cilantro, cumin, coriander, salt, pepper, and chili flakes (if using) to a food processor. Pulse until the mixture is coarse and crumbly but holds together when pressed.
  3. Adjust the Texture:
    • Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Mix in baking powder and flour. If the mixture feels too wet, add more flour.
  4. Shape the Falafel:
    • Using your hands, form small balls or patties from the mixture, about the size of a golf ball.

Cooking Options:

For Frying:

  1. Heat 2-3 inches of oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry the falafel balls in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  3. Remove and drain on a paper towel.

For Baking:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
  2. Arrange the falafel balls on the sheet and lightly spray them with oil.
  3. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.

For Air Frying:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the falafel balls in the air fryer basket and lightly spray with oil.
  3. Cook for 12-15 minutes, shaking halfway through.
