Ingredients
For the Stuffing Balls:
- 4 cups bread cubes, preferably stale
- 1 cup finely chopped celery
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg, beaten
For the Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
For the Stuffing Balls:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped celery and onion, and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Prepare Stuffing Mix: In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, dried sage, thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper. Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the mixture and stir to combine. Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes to absorb the liquid.
- Form Balls: Once the mixture has cooled slightly, add the beaten egg and mix well. Form the mixture into balls, about the size of a golf ball, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the stuffing balls are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
For the Gravy:
- Make Roux: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux.
- Add Broth: Gradually add the chicken or vegetable broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season: Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
Serving:
- Serve Hot: Place the stuffing balls on a serving platter and drizzle with the prepared gravy. Serve immediately, enjoying the comforting flavors of this classic dish.
