Classic Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Extra sugar for rolling

Directions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  4. Combine: Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add the buttermilk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough is formed.
  5. Shape Cookies: Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and roll in sugar. Place onto prepared baking sheets, about 1 1/2 inches apart.
  6. Bake: Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
