Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Halve the Hawaiian rolls. Do not separate individual roles. Spray an 11 x 7 or 13 x 9 inch baking dish with nonstick spray.Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared baking dish. On the bottom half, place a layer of smoked ham, then Swiss cheese, and then more smoked ham. Add the top part of the Hawaiian rolls.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and add poppy seeds, honey, chopped onions, Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce.Pour over the sandwiches and spread over the sandwiches using a pastry brush. Cover the plate with aluminum foil.
Cover and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 10 minutes, until the top is lightly browned and the cheese is melted. Remove the sandwiches from the pan and place them on a cutting board.Using a sharp knife, cut individual sandwiches along the edges of the bun.
Notes
Very thinly sliced ham works best for this recipe. I like to use sweet honey smoked ham, but any ham will work with this recipe.
To make ahead, prepare the sandwiches but reserve the butter-honey-poppyseed glaze until just before baking. For more preparation tips, see below. For variety, you can replace the Swiss cheese with Pepper Jack, Cheddar, or American cheese.
Finely chopped fresh onions can be replaced with chopped dried onions.
These sandwiches are best served immediately; However, they can be reheated in the oven, toaster or microwave.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Heat in the oven, toaster or microwave until cheese melts.Freeze double wrapped in sturdy freezer bags for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
