Soft Dinner Rolls
Ingredients:
- For the Rolls:
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
- For the Topping:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Directions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Prepare the Dough:
- Add the melted butter, salt, and egg to the yeast mixture and mix well.
- Gradually add 3 1/2 cups of flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, a little at a time, until the dough is manageable and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Rolls:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-16 equal pieces, depending on the size of rolls you prefer.
- Shape each piece into a ball or rectangle and place them in a greased baking dish or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Second Rise:
- Cover the rolls with a clean cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they are puffy and almost doubled in size.
- Bake the Rolls:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
- Finish with Butter:
- Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter.
- Serve:
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with butter, honey, or your favorite spreads.
