Sweet Dinner Rolls

Ingredients:

  • For the Rolls:
    • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
    • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 large egg
    • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • For the Filling (optional):
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • For the Topping:
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
    • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and granulated sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • Add the melted butter, salt, and egg to the yeast mixture and mix well.
    • Gradually add 3 1/2 cups of flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, a little at a time, until the dough is manageable and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Rolls:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-16 equal pieces, depending on the size of rolls you prefer.
    • If using the filling, roll each piece into a ball, flatten slightly, spread with a bit of softened butter, sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, and fold the dough over to seal the filling inside.
    • Place the shaped rolls in a greased baking dish.
  5. Second Rise:
    • Cover the rolls with a clean cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they are puffy and almost doubled in size.
  6. Bake the Rolls:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  7. Finish with Butter and Powdered Sugar:
    • Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter.
    • Allow the rolls to cool slightly, then dust generously with powdered sugar.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve warm and enjoy!
