This buttermilk cake recipe is a classic dessert that’s easy to make with simple ingredients.

You can’t go wrong with this cake and I’ve never served it to anyone who didn’t enjoy it.This is a simple, old fashioned recipe that your family will love. This cake is wonderful for any occasion or event and you won’t be taking it home with you. It keeps for several days in the fridge and tastes wonderful with coffee as a dessert or with milk as a snack.

Ingredients

(8 servings)

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • ½ cup softened butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 unbaked pie crust (9 inch )

How to Make Buttermilk Cake

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Beat
eggs until foamy.Add sugar, butter and flour and mix until smooth.
Add buttermilk, lemon juice, vanilla and nutmeg. Pour into the cake base.
Bake until center is set, 40 to 60 minutes.
Remove from oven and allow to cool for 1 hour before serving.Tips
If the edges of the cake base brown too quickly, cover the cake with aluminum foil for the rest of the baking time.
You know your cake is done when the top is lightly browned and the center of the cake still jiggles slightly. It will continue to harden as it cools. You can stick a toothpick in the middle. If it comes out almost clean, your cake is ready.
